KINGSPORT — Kingsport was left in shock Saturday morning as pictures and videos surfaced of the decades-old "Big John" Indian statue collapsing in the Pratt’s parking lot. Jonathan Pratt, son of the late Pratt’s owner Tom Pratt, said the iconic statue had extensive deterioration on the inside.

KINGSPORT — Although construction on Main Street has not posed a major problem for Kingsport events or created traffic issues, the end of construction will bring more space and better flow for parades and festivals. “We actually went all-in on all of our [festivals] other than just random modifications on which way people walked or where a food truck was parked,” said Emily Thompson, director of Fun Fest and special events.

KINGSPORT — Basketball homecoming has free admission this year in Kingsport, part of a celebration highlighting an 18-month basketball venue project that is to cost about $23.2 million. Kingsport City Schools or KCS will hold a grand reopening and ribbon cutting for Dobyns-Bennett High School's renovated Buck Van Huss Dome and surrounding areas Jan. 28. The event will be between the varsity girls and boys games with guest teams from Gate City High School.

BLOUNTVILLE — The Sullivan County Commission has postponed a decision on a resolution by Commissioner Matt Slagle to help fund a new airline service at the Tri-Cities Airport. Slagle’s resolution allocates $240,000 in hotel/motel tax revenue toward a $2 million minimum revenue guarantee for the new airline service. The resolution holds the funding until a third party is named or agreed upon to partner with the airport to bring a new airline in.

KINGSPORT — Winter is in full swing, and with colder temperatures on the way, local organizations are ramping up efforts to provide additional resources for individuals experiencing homelessness. Leaders at several Kingsport shelters and ministries said they face an increased demand as people seek respite from the cold weather. Captain Crystal Radi with the Kingsport Salvation Army said their shelter is almost always at capacity during the winter.
