KINGSPORT — Even with a proposed $1 million funding increase from Kingsport leaders, the city school system is still planning to dip into its unrestricted fund balance by slightly more than $1 million. However, Kingsport City Schools otherwise for fiscal 2025-26 would have had about $2 million to make up by spending cuts and/or spending more fund balance.

WASHINGTON — If you're a middle school or high school student with interest and ability in computer science, the U.S. Congress has a contest for you. The Congressional App Challenge is a premier contest in computer science, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Diana Harshbarger, R-1st. The release said participation in the challenge has grown exponentially to reached underserved, diverse and rural student populations.

UPDATE: The Kingsport Police Department reported Wednesday that previously missing juvenile Brayden Horne was found safe and is no longer missing. KINGSPORT — Local police are seeking the public’s help in locating a missing 13-year-old middle school student. The Kingsport Police Department is searching for 13-year-old Brayden Horne, identified as a white male student attending Sevier Middle School and living on West Sullivan Street.

BLOUNTVILLE — The proposed $100 million 2025-26 General Purpose Sullivan County Schools budget would be balanced using more than $9.7 million in unrestricted fund balance. The county Board of Education voted 7-0 Wednesday night to approve the budget of $100,965,228 with estimated revenues of $89,752,188. It would require no county property tax funding increase. The proposal is slated to go before the County Commission Budget Committee 4 p.m. Thursday.

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett High School senior Liam M. Klug has won a National Merit Scholarship of $2,500, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday. His probable career, according to National Merit, is music performance, and the funding comes from the corporation. He is a member of “Portail du Son,” a saxophone quintet from D-B that is performing at Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition May 9-11 at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana.
