    EVERY few years, questions regarding the limitations of parliament’s power to amend the Constitution, and the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction to review, and if necessary, strike down constitutional amendments, become issues of great public interest. This time around, these questions are being raised in response to the 26th Constitutional Amendment, and expectations that the Supreme Court should strike down certain changes for violating the principle of the independence of the judiciary.

    IF the government announces replacing the parliamentary system with a presidential one, would the reason suffice that many democracies in the world have presidential systems? And since parliamentary democracy in Pakistan has “failed”, it should be abolished? Establishing a constitutional court to perform constitutional review by stripping the Supreme Court (SC) of this function is as fundamental a change for the judiciary.

    ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has expanded its Tajir Dost Scheme to include 36 new cities, aiming to bring traders and wholesalers into the formal tax structure as required by the IMF. Since April 1, tax authorities have registered over 40,000 traders under the scheme in six cities: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi. The registration scope has now been widened to cover more cities.

    ISLAMABAD: In a sudden policy shift, the Shehbaz Sharif government on Friday revoked its March order, banning the export of flour made from imported wheat amid a nationwide strike by millers. At the same time, a ban on wheat imports was imposed, which came too late for the country, particularly for farmers in Punjab who were protesting against unnecessary wheat imports despite a bumper crop.
