For years, Connecticut lawmakers have debated a policy that would have towns plan and zone for a set number of units based on regional housing needs, and a new report shows exactly how many units each town would have to plan for under the policy. In 2023, the legislature passed a law that mandated the “fair share” study, and the state contracted with consulting firm ECONorthwest. The firm released town-specific numbers earlier this month.

Ned Lamont’s proposal for town aid grants, including the Education Cost Sharing grant, the largest operating grant to K-12 school districts. The state’s $2.3 billion Education Cost Sharing program would continue to follow a previously authorized schedule of increases, growing by more than $157 million in the first year of the new biennium and by another $11 million in the second.

Connecticut has joined 17 other states in suing President Donald Trump over his latest attempt to end birthright citizenship, the constitutional principle that guarantees U.S. citizenship to anyone born in the country. The lawsuit, filed on Jan. 21, challenges an executive order that aims to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. if both of their parents are not permanent residents. It is unclear how many Connecticut residents would be directly affected if the executive order is approved.
