The Chin’an Gaming Hall is in a doublewide trailer off the Birchwood exit on the outskirts of Anchorage, a far cry from a Las Vegas style casino, but there are often long lines of people waiting to get inside. Since it opened in January, its 85 electronic bingo machines stay busy. This picture could change if the state is successful in its bid to shut down the gambling operation.

The mayor of Anchorage has thrown her support behind the Eklutna Tribe’s efforts to build a small casino on the outskirts of the city. Mayor Suzanne LaFrance’s endorsement comes as the Bureau of Indian Affairs has closed public comment on the proposed project’s environmental assessment. The land in question is just off the Glenn Highway’s Birchwood exit. Only about six-and-a-half acres are involved — a Native allotment that could become another important test case for tribal sovereignty in Alaska.

A series of remembrances for President Jimmy Carter, which began in Georgia over the weekend, are set to culminate Thursday with a national day of mourning. Carter, who died on Dec. 29 the age of 100, was known in Southeast Alaska as Nahóowoo — a name he was given when the Deisheetaan of Angoon adopted him sometime in the late 1970s. Matthew Fred of the Daisheetan gave Carter his Lingít name. It belonged to Billy Jones, who witnessed the bombardment of Angoon by the U.S. Navy in 1882.

A group of homeowners in Birchwood have filed a lawsuit against the Native Village of Eklutna over a small-scale casino planned near Anchorage. The tribal gaming hall would be built on about eight acres of land, a few miles off the Birchwood exit on the Glenn Highway. Sharon Avery, the acting head of the federal National Indian Gaming Commission, was also named in the lawsuit.

Sad to report this on a holiday weekend. One man is dead, another missing near the southern tip of Kodiak Island -- after two fishermen left their boat in a Zodiac to go beach combing. https://t.co/lPla8Q9TCt

Byron Mallott has passed. A great Alaska Native leader, yet complicated. Someday, I had hoped he would talk with me about his shocking departure from his job as Lt. Gov. But here's a part of his story worth knowing, a KTVA Frontiers program 5 years ago. https://t.co/O6OykyUo1C

This was a thoughtful piece about communication vs. relationships, seen through a music teacher's eyes. https://t.co/yAvgalWKvC
