This year has been one characterised by pleasant surprises, but few have come more out of the blue than this cracking little restaurant inside a hotel on Edinburgh University grounds just off Salisbury Crags, says Richard Bath. It’s almost a year old, and is one of the best kept secrets in Edinburgh. The Scott Hotel is inside Edinburgh University’s Pollock Halls campus, just next to the Commonwealth Pool.

I’ve had a few pleasant restaurant reviewing surprises recently, but few more than the new, surprisingly affordable W Lounge. So here’s my verdict:What is it:With its 360 degree panoramic views over the whole city from its city centre site, the five-star W Edinburgh hotel, recently named Scottish Hotel of the Year 2025, has become a popular eating and drinking spot in the capital.

Richard Bath tries out Eve, the capital’s newest Italian restaurant. The commendably swanky Virgin Hotel has its main entrance onto the top of Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh’s most characterful spots, which is just by George IVth Bridge, The Mound and the Royal Mile. The labyrinthine building is so huge that it extends all the way down to the Grassmarket and Cowgate, which is where you’ll find the front entrance to Eve, the hotel’s new Italian restaurant.

This ridiculous judicial overreach bankrupted Birmingham and will wreak further damage unless addressed - it's time for the law to be urgently clarified or, if necessary, changed.

We all know that courts have too much power over our country's immigration policy. But increasingly they're also telling businesses exactly what to pay their workers. Sounds mad? That’s because it is. And it's going to destroy our economy. A 🧵 on the Equality Act: https://t.co/uSMW3eVoZ0
