Local centuries-old oak tree brought down by storm

Legend in Preble County has it that when the wind rustles through the leaves of the large white oak, “one could hear the story of the events that it witnessed,” according to the Preble County Historical Society. “The Whispering Oak,” was designated a bicentennial tree by the National Arborists’ Association and the International Society of Arboriculture in February 1976. Wilson said they do not know the exact date the tree starting growing.

Doors open for the event at 10:30 a.m., according to the Trump campaign. Vance was raised by his grandparents in Middletown, while his mother, whom he introduced during his speech Wednesday, battled an addiction he said she put behind her 10 years ago. He spent a significant amount of time traveling to Kentucky with his grandparents to visit family and said he hoped to be buried in a small mountain cemetery there.

Last night I got a couple of business tips on the course and one big laugh. Mother Nature decided to pour rain on us for about a half hour last night making the clubs a little slick. It was so slick, my playing partner put his five iron about five feet into a pond next to the tee box after a swing.

Former DDN reporter and two-time Pulitzer winner, Kim Christensen dies at 71

At the Orange County Register, he was part of a team that won the Pulitzer for reporting on stories about fertility fraud at the University of California-Irvine. At the Oregonian, in Portland, his work on abuse of immigrants by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service also earned the Pulitzer. Retired Dayton Daily News reporter Wes Hills worked with Christensen in the ‘80s, including an in-depth piece about an east Dayton crime family.

I traveled to Greenville on Monday to walk in those same footsteps and be as close to the centerline of totality for the eclipse as I could get. Although Tecumseh and his brother reportedly predicted an eclipse, I’m sure they and their followers were in awe when the sun disappeared. People staged at the Darke County Fairgrounds on Monday had those same feelings after watching the totality of the eclipse for close to four minutes.

Our friends at outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas in Chicago tell us the tournament could cost employers nearly $10 billion in unproductive work. The firm’s estimate is based on 68 million adults who plan to wager on the games, according to 2023 figures from the American Gaming Association. Using the employment-population ratio of 60.1% in February 2024, that means approximately 40.9 million working Americans are likely to be caught up in March Madness, according to the firm.

DeWine also activated the Ohio National Guard to help Logan County officials with the clean up of storm debris on public property. An assessment team from the 200th REDHORSE Squadron was deployed to Logan County Sunday morning to conduct an assessment of needed support. Three people were killed, several were injured, and a huge number of homes were destroyed Thursday night as a storm system spawned a series of suspected tornadoes across eastern Indiana and western Ohio.

The Air Force Research Laboratory announced this week it has plans to hire entry-level to expert positions across multiple AFRL locations at a hiring event at the Holiday Inn, 2800 Presidential Drive, Fairborn, April 2-3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.AFRL, which is based at Wright-Patterson, has a large science and technology workforce, and has job openings for scientists, engineers, technologists or contract and financial management specialists. Hiring managers will began reviewing resumes today.
