When you hit rock bottom, life doesn’t just throw you a lifeline. Instead, it challenges you to find an anchor within yourself, something that grounds you to humanity and fuels the fight to keep moving forward. If you’re lucky, you might find not only an escape from reality, but a profound connection to it. Junior year of college was the hardest and most trying year of my life. My friend group had dispersed and transferred out of school.

Truth be told, I was not supposed to go to Cabrini. In the fall of 1993, I was a senior at Saint Basil Academy in Northeast Philadelphia, focused mostly on taking the SATs and deciding on a college. It’s hard to believe, but this was pre-internet so there were no websites or online reviews. I was the first person in my family to pursue college, so I had no firsthand references or recommendations.

Cabrini University’s student-run newspaper, the Loquitur, received an extraordinary 16 College Media Association Pinnacle Awards, marking a historic milestone as the highest number of awards the newspaper ever achieved in a single year. “It’s incredible, it’s a record-breaking number. We’ve never won that many before,” said Professor Wendy Rosenfield. Rosenfield is a professor of practice for journalism in the communication department and the Loquitur’s student media advisor.

Where am I? What? You’re telling me this isn’t the underworld? It’s just Cabrini? Then, why is it so dead? Despite a relatively inactive campus due to Cabrini’s closure, there’s a lot to love about this school,For starters, I love how easily accessible the teachers are. Cabrini professors are always available if you need extra help, and to push you to be the best version of yourself. This help comes in unexpected ways, as just a simple interaction this past week turned into something so much more.

The closer the weekend is, the fewer students are seen on Cabrini’s campus. However, the Wolfington Center attracts a small crowd every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cozy Thursdays are a time when everyone on campus is welcome to hang out, enjoy tasty food, and have meaningful conversation with their peers. Sheila Nalwoga, the Next Steps AmeriCorps team leader, hosts the event.
