The first time I saw Joan Butcher she was creeping around the edge of the queue of students waiting to get into the main Cook bar, asking for spare change or cigarettes, reeking of alcohol, sweat, smoke and urine, her hands tobacco-stained, her skin visibly dirty even from a distance. It would have been the second time I got properly trashed. This was in 1994, and I had just turned 18. Joan was 40, though she looked much older.
