As the Bay Area’s first heat wave of 2025 began to crank up the thermometer on Thursday, the Bay Area Air District responded in a familiar way by issuing the season’s first Spare the Air alert. The agency announced about 11:45 a.m. that the smog level for the region is expected to be unhealthy on Friday. The alert forbids people from burning wood and urges them to avoid driving to reduce the pollution.

RICHMOND — A two-car freeway crash over Memorial Day weekend killed a person, and the California Highway Patrol appealed to the public for help as they try to figure out what happened. According to the CHP, the rollover wreck Saturday happened about 6:10 p.m. on westbound Interstate 80 just west of Portrero Avenue. The CHP said a black Fiat and a white Mercedes-Benz collided with one another. The passenger in the right front seat of the Fiat died at the scene, the CHP said.
