The Mercury News, previously known as the San Jose Mercury News and commonly referred to as The Merc, is a daily newspaper based in San Jose, California, situated in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is published by the Bay Area News Group, which is a part of Digital First Media. The Mercury News holds the distinction of being the fifth largest newspaper in the United States by circulation. In March 2016, the Bay Area News Group announced a rebranding of the newspaper from its original name to The Mercury News as part of a strategy to consolidate its operations. The new branding was officially launched on April 5, 2016.
