Commencements at the state’s four-year colleges and universities began Wednesday with Montclair State Universityand will conclude May 28 with New Jersey City University, a 98-year-old institution in Jersey City pursuing a possible merger with Kean University.

An Ocean County school district that recently decided to merge two high schools into one building has picked a new name for the combined school. The Jackson Liberty High School building will become Jackson Township High School starting in September. The newly-named school will include students currently attending Jackson Liberty and Jackson Memorial High School. It will be the district’s only high school.

An Essex County student intentionally set a Chromebook on fire Thursday for a viral TikTok challenge that has sparked blazes in schools around the country, police said. The 15-year-old student at Belleville High School was charged with third degree arson and criminal mischief after participating in the “Chromebook Challenge” social media trend, according to police.

Fairleigh Dickinson University has reached a preliminary agreement to transfer ownership of Wroxton College — its campus in England for six decades — to a group led by university alumni, officials announced Friday. If all goes according to plan, Fairleigh Dickinson will continue operating Wroxton College through May 2026, then the alumni group will assume control, university president Michael Avaltroni said. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Rutgers University is standing by comedian Ramy Youssef after a state lawmaker asked the school to reconsider choosing the actor as a commencement speaker. Assemblyman Avi Schnall, who is a rabbi, wrote a letter to Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway that said Youssef is “widely seen as polarizing.” Schnall’s letter did not offer specifics, but Youssef has advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza.
