But after initially fleeing outside, the two victims courageously decided to defend their property. Newcastle Crown Court heard they got the better of the raiders, one of whom ended up "rolled in a ball" on the ground.

A chemical attack at a Tyneside pub left several customers in pain and distress with one man screaming: "My eyes, my eyes". Stevan Newton squirted so much ammonia at three men in the toilet area of a North Tyneside pub, there was a puddle of it on the floor and a number of people were left with sore eyes and being or feeling sick. Newcastle Crown Court heard one victim suffered burns to his eyes and cheek.

A violent thug strangled his partner until she passed out in a hotel and emptied a cat litter tray over her head in "abhorrent" attacks. Craig Bainbridge and his then-girlfriend had gone to Ramside Hall Hotel, in County Durham, in April last year and were in a room watching TV when Bainbridge became abusive. Newcastle Crown Court heard he punched her leg and called her names and she became upset and said she wanted to go home.
