By next year, California may have one less refinery to produce gasoline and other fuels to motorists across the state. Valero, one of the country’s major transportation fuels producers, notified the California Energy Commission on Wednesday morning that the company intends to “idle, restructure, or cease refining operations” at Valero’s refinery Benicia by the end of April 2026. Valero officials did not give a specific reason why it might cease operations.

With contract negotiations looming, San Diego County union workers held a rally Saturday morning on the west side of the County Administration Center. “Many of our departments are still understaffed and it’s important that the communities get what they need,” said Crystal Irving, president of SEIU Local 221, which represents about 11,000 members who work in county health services, social welfare, clerical, registered nursing and other jobs.

Hundreds took to the streets of downtown San Diego on Saturday as part of an interfaith prayer service and procession that organizers called a collective show of support for immigrants, the elderly and the poor. “What I hope to accomplish today is to remind ourselves in this era of cuts, in this era of threats of deportation and building a budget for deportation, to remind ourselves of our value,” said Father Scott Santarosa, pastor of Our of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
