    Yesterday at around 4:00 p.m. the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies were called to check on a black truck parked off SR247 and Bodick Road, an area popularly known as the Johnson Valley Painted Rocks. According the the Sheriff’s Departmen a passerby noticed a black truck parked in the area on Monday (6/16). When the same truck hadn’t moved by the following day, the passerby stopped to check on the vehicle and reportedly found a dead body inside.

    24-hour construction continues through Friday (June 20) on Old Woman Springs Road, continues this week. CalTrans has issued an advisory that crews are scheduled to hold continuous, 24-hour flagging operations on the road at Aberdeen Drive and in the wash south of Reche Road. Caltrans says that wait times on each side of the flagging operations are expected to be 20 minutes, and they ask that you plan ahead.

    The Town of Yucca Valley’s Youth Commission concluded a month-long food drive in support of local families affected by domestic violence. Throughout May the Youth Commission collected hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food items and dry goods which were donated to Unity Home, a nonprofit organization providing shelter, advocacy, and support to survivors of domestic violence.

    This past week’s California Fish and Game Commission met over two days, with almost the entire first half of Thursday’s meeting taken up with The Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan. However, tucked into the consent agenda was a change in status for the Mojave Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) from “threatened” to “endangered.” Tortoise Biologist Luke Basuolto joined me at the Z107.7 Newsroom to talk with me about what the uplisting means.

    The presentation began with California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Chuck Bonham urging the commission to approve the latest draft of the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan. The plan was first presented in February of 2025 with updates in April and a final draft expected to be delivered by the end of June.
