    The deadline to pay your taxes is today (04/15/25) if you owe income tax to the state or federal government for 2024. However, today isn’t the drop-dead date to file your taxes. Individuals can file for an automatic extension to October 15th if you need more time. If you are expecting a refund, then you don’t have to worry about filing for another six months. However, that extension doesn’t change the date when the government expects you to pay the taxes you owe.

    The Desert Rat Convention is returning to Twentynine Palms. The gathering used to be a May Day tradition in the hi desert starting in 1937 and lasting until 1948, when Pioneer Days moved to October and eliminated the spring family fun event. It made its triumphant return in 2024 where they had mining demonstrations, mini golf, rock painting, a rat raffle, Hastie Bus tours, BBQ and old timey music.

    Today is National Record Store Day, celebrated by independent record stores and the folks who still enjoy going into a store and flipping through bins looking for something new to spin. The number of people streaming music goes up each year whille album sales and payments to artists continues to go down. However, whenever someone does physically buy an album today, almost half of them choose the album on vinyl.

    The western or “Joshua Tree” entrance into Joshua Tree National Park reopened today after the first closure in the construction process of the new entrance which will move the booths further inside the boundaries of the park and will be able to accommodate more cars entering and exiting. That’s good news for visitors who can find themselves in bumper to bumper traffic if they choose to use the West Entrance on a weekend.

    The California State Library and the First Partner’s Office is teaming up to continue to provide free day-use vehicle passes to any San Bernardino County resident with a library card. The pass grants you free day-use entry into over 200 participating state parks, and you can check out the pass for 7 days and renew it up to two times which is handy if you are traveling outside of Southern California to explore state parks north of us.
