The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness doesn’t feel a month is enough for those dealing with conditions like anxiety and depression to share their stories and seek healing. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, officials from the organization’s Northeast PA Region started a campaign in May titled “In Every Story, There’s Strength” which will continue through June 2026.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metro area increased one-half of a percentage point in April from the same time last year to 4.1%, according to data from the state Department of Labor & Industry. Satyajit Ghosh, Ph.D., a University of Scranton professor of economics, described the yearly change as “somewhat significant” and noted it mirrors the statewide and national increases.

The new owners of a local travel agency strive to continue offering the same quality customer experience while expanding services. Managing members Alan Kline and Matt Kizis — who took over operations in December — noted the strong legacy established by co-founder and longtime President Debra Freas and John Madden, the organization’s executive vice president, played a big role in their decision to carry on the tradition. Both Freas and Madden plan to remain involved with TravelWorld, Kline said.
