CONCORD, N.C. (WBTV) - One of the biggest races of the year will bring tens of thousands of fans from all over to Concord to watch their favorite drivers fight to be in the winner’s circle. Racing begins Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway as the weekend builds up to the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. The race weekend is one without borders with fans coming from across the country, and across the world. Some are from as far away as Brazil and New Zealand.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. (WBTV) - With the weather warming up, veterinarians are seeing a huge jump in reported snakebites to pets, especially dogs. Experts say the reptiles, including copperheads, come out during the day to warm themselves up and can easily come in contact with a curious dog. But is it fatal if your pet is bitten by one of these poisonous snakes? The veterinarian we talked with told WBTV she sees about sixty snake bites on dogs…each month. And that’s only in one office.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) - A suspect wheedling a knife stabbed a man at a mosque before police say he was shot by an armed guard. This happened at the Islamic Center of South Carolina near downtown Rock Hill. That suspect, according to investigators, took off before being chased down by local authorities. “It is kind of surprising and kind of scary too,” said Muhammad Khanani. Muhammad Khanani is one of the founding board members here at the Islamic Center of South Carolina.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - After an hours-long standoff came to a peaceful end Monday afternoon police say they were able to negotiate with an armed man held up at a convenience store. Police were able to de-escalate the situation with that subject they say was suffering with mental difficulties without having to use force. The police department has several crisis response teams specifically for situations like this.

Organizers held a balloon release to honor and remember those who have been lost, and to lean on each other during their difficult times. Two communities back in the day with bad blood between them have joined together to end gun violence. But they know the fight is far from over. A fatal decision made in anger can last only moments.
