A former care home in Ventnor will be turned into ‘high-quality housing’, following approval of planning permission. County Hall planners have approved Chris Danes of In Safe Hands Home Care Limited’s change of use application to convert Bluebell House at 74 – 76 Mitchell Avenue in Ventnor into 3 apartments. Bluebell House Residential Care Home closed in October 2022 due to a ‘lack of staff availability’, according to Mr Danes’ application form.

East Cowes Carnival supporters have been busy fundraising for the town’s first carnival in 30 years later in the summer. As previously reported, the carnival returns on the afternoon of August 23 with the idea coming from Jane Allchorn, who runs Community Spirited at the Parkside Pavilion. The café played host to a 4km Star Wars-themed fun run with families out in force participating and cheering on the local runners.

A proposal for a new three-bedroom clifftop house with rooftop solar panels within the grounds of a former hotel has been refused. Officers turned down an application for a two-storey home off Ventnor’s Madeira Road, next to the Ventnor Towers Hotel. The clifftop application site is on the edge of Bonchurch, the village which suffered a catastrophic landslide in December 2023.

Five new beach huts could be installed on a picturesque Isle of Wight seafront. Canice Holding Ltd has applied for planning permission to place five ‘sensitively designed’ huts with ‘traditional external finishes’ on land next to Pilots Point in Totland Bay. The proposed wooden huts would be used to store beach items and for shelter during the day, according to a statement prepared by Canice Holding’s agent, Plan Research.

Cheverton Copse Holiday Park has been given the green light to install a number of luxury lodges to replace touring pitches, in light of the declining state of tourism on the Isle of Wight. Planners have accepted Mike Haslin’s application to replace 17 pitches at Cheverton Copse Holiday Park near Lake with a ‘5-star scheme’ of high-quality holiday units. His approved proposal also includes the construction of a new amenity block as well as associated parking and infrastructure.
