My daily exercise is a time to escape. While I plod through the dark mornings in my quest for 10,000+ steps, I’m laughing along with the hosts of “The Rest Is History” or plowing through a true crime mystery series. Or, at least, that’s what I filled my ears with for much of the last decade — podcast after podcast, a consumption that only grew during the pandemic. But podcasts began to wear thin on me earlier this year.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Southside High School attended the State Cross Country Meet in Hot Springs. This meet brought together the best-of-the-best of the entire state. Across two days there were a total of 1,787 runners. Southside High School competed in the 4A division. The state of Arkansas has special rules for athletics that allow for ninth grade junior high athletes to be elevated to the senior high teams in the last competitions of the season (for once they move up, they can’t go back down).

Cave City High School will host the Holiday Run on Saturday, December 14th. The race will begin at 5 p.m. preceding the Cave City Christmas Parade. This race will support the Cave City High School Junior Class, with the proceeds helping to raise funds for the Prom and the 2026 Graduation. Early entry registration fee is only $20, which includes race entry and a T-shirt. Entries must be received by Nov. 20 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. Register online at Runsignup.com.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Humane Society of Independence County (HSIC) held its annual Trivia Night at the Batesville Community Center, with 17 tables sponsored by numerous organizations in the community. The theme of the night was the Wizard of Oz, titled “There’s No Place Like a Home.” The entire evening was geared toward benefiting the nearly 100 animals currently at the Humane Society. The evening began with a wonderful buffet-style dinner provided by PECO Foods and LifePlus.

The Tuckerman Bulldogs River Run Cross Country Race was held at Jacksonport State Park on Tuesday, Oct. 15. It was a flat and fast course, however the weather was challenging. It was 57 degrees with strong winds, driving the wind chill down to the low 50s. Serenity Harrison finished in 6th place in the senior high girls race in her highest finish of the season. Her time of 23:01.81 over the 5,000-meter distance was another new personal record, nearly a minute faster than just the week before.

The annual Caveman Open Cross Country Invitational was held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Cave City. The races were held in a rural field north of the school. Most of the course is flat on a grassy course, but there is one challenging area where runners go uphill for about one quarter of a mile, then followed by an equal distance downhill. Senior high runners go up this challenging portion twice. A highlight for today’s meet was the boys junior high race.

During September you might have thought there was an RV show going on in the parking lot of Ramsey Heights Baptist Church, as there were campers and RVs from several states, including Texas and Louisiana. Instead, it was a visit by The Master’s Builders. The Master’s Builders is a group of mostly-retired craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to assisting Baptist churches across the nation with improvement projects. They first formed in 1991 and have been doing projects for 34 years.
