Hi all and, for those who celebrate, Happy Hump Day. Yesterday I spoke with Substack bestseller and writer and big beard-haver for a long while about how he teaches authors to get the fuck out of their own way. It felt like someone explaining the internet to a victorian child. The concepts didn’t seem complicated, yet my brain couldn’t grasp them. One big takeaway though was to survey my readers and see if any of you dingledoos would want to attend a workshop, taught by me, about how to write.

When we say “autopilot,” it means setting up repeatable, scalable strategies that keep working for you long after you’ve done the initial work. (It doesn’t mean pressing a magic button and never lifting a finger again.)So, how do you do that?

One of the fastest ways to grow on Substack is to collaborate with other creators on the platform. Because, unlike most social media platforms, Substack is a community. Yes, you can take a solo approach, but growth will likely be slow and it can feel as if you’re just posting in the void most of the time.

The best way to make money as an author is to not to grin and bear something you don’t like. It’s to find something you already innately understand and obsess over it. I’ve been a publisher for 10 years, made over a million dollars on my own creative work, helped writers raise millions more, and been a six-figure creative entrepreneur since 2017, and so I speak from some amount of authors when I say that the worst thing you can do when it comes to marketing your work is everything.

How to find the readers who will voraciously consume your content and be overjoyed to buy from you. Writers are under the dangerous assumption that if they write something great, then people will find and buy it, even though they never talk about it. As somebody who’s been doing this professionally for 15 years, has helped authors sell millions of dollars in books, and been a six-figure creator since 2017, I can say from personal experience that’s just not true.
