    Councillors in Belfast have unanimously approved the construction of new blocks of student housing despite objections from hotel industry representatives concerned over plans to allow summer overnight stays. Representatives on the council’s planning committee agreed on Tuesday evening to the erection of the 895 room purpose built managed student accommodation across 9 and 20 storey blocks, on Corporation Street.

    A high profile property developer has successfully overturned Belfast City Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for a major student accommodation scheme just off Great Victoria Street. Artemis Developments, owned by former Policing Board chair Barry Gilligan, is proposing 354 student units on the site at Glenalpin Street, located between Shaftesbury Square and Sandy Row.

    Co Antrim concrete firm RTU has completed a £500,000 investment in a new waste recycling system. The Newtownabbey ready mix company said the new set-up, which has capacity to reclaim around 7,200 tonnes of concrete for reuse per year, is the only one of its kind on the island of Ireland. The system features two high-capacity reclaimers, large grey water stirring tanks, and an advanced filter press.
