MICANOPY, Fla. (WCJB) - A woman from Micanopy who sued the state over a law banning strippers under the age of 21 has given up her court case. Attorneys for Serenity Bushey, a former dancer at Cafe Risqué, tried to nullify the state law because she lost her job when she was 19. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - A push to hold doctors accountable in malpractice cases ends with Governor Ron DeSantis. He announced on Thursday that he’s vetoing a bill that would have allowed more people to sue doctors in malpractice cases. “The question, though, is what would this legislation do for the cost of health care here in Florida, access to care in Florida, and the ability to recruit and keep physicians,” Gov. DeSantis said.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) - During an undercover operation, Marion County deputies say they arrested a man trying to have sex with a child. According to the arrest report, Cain Matias-Godinez, 42, reached out to the detective on Sunday after seeing a post online of a 13-year-old girl. He told the detective pretending to be a minor that he wanted to pay her to have sex with her in a few days. He was told the girl was underage.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Gainesville city leaders have selected the city’s next fire chief after a nationwide search. Officials announced Joseph “Shawn” Hillhouse will take over the position effective June 9. Last November, Hillhouse assumed the role of interim fire chief following the departure of former department leader Joe Dixon. The Live Oak native joined Gainesville Fire Rescue in 2003, starting as a noncertified firefighter and rising through the ranks.
