Brent Smith, the current dean of the school of communication, will step into the role of associate vice president for executive education effective July 1, Provost Alexandra Socarides announced in a community-wide email Thursday morning. The new position is part of the executive education program of the “Extraordinary Emerson 2030” initiative. The executive education program is scheduled to begin the spring of 2026.

The New England Patriots hired Mike Vrabel as the franchise’s next head coach early Sunday morning. No terms have been disclosed, but sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Vrabel and New England agreed to a multiyear contract. The appointment follows the termination of Jerod Mayo, who served as the Patriots’ head coach for one year, finishing 4-13. A former Patriot himself, Vrabel played as a linebacker from 2001 to 2008 and is a three-time Super Bowl champion.

The New England Patriots fired head coach Jerod Mayo immediately following their Jan. 5 game against the Buffalo Bills. Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft announced the move in a statement Sunday evening. “For me, personally, this was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made,” Kraft said in his statement. “I have known Jerod for 17 years.

The Boston Bruins fired Head Coach Jim Montgomery on Tuesday. He will be replaced with Bruins Associate Coach Joe Sacco as interim head coach. Montgomery was hired in 2022, leaving after coaching the B’s for only two seasons. He became the 29th head coach in franchise history, the team’s third since 2007. As both a player and coach, Montgomery has been a part of various NHL franchises: the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars.
