Newport care home residents celebrate VE Day with street party

In honour of the 80th anniversary, they painted flags, decorated cakes, and adorned bedroom windows with red, white, and blue. The home was full of lively decorations, party food, and entertainment. Richard Beavis provided live music, singing old-time favourites. Family and friends joined in the celebrations. Some shared memories of the original VE Day, 80 years ago.

Dozens of locals have taken to social media to slam Monmouthshire County Council’s decision, which was confirmed by a planning inspector after a visit in January. The outbuilding, used as an outdoor seating area since February 2022, had been put up without planning permission in a conservation area. The pub’s boss, Shuan Barnsley, argued it was a typical timber shed, but the council disagreed and refused retrospective consent last June.
Popular pub receives top marks following successful inspection

The Oddfellows Arms, on Commercial Street, Pontnewydd, was given the highest rating after an inspection on April 9, 2025. The food safety officer rated the pub "very good" for both hygienic food handling and management of food safety. The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were also found to be "good." The Food Hygiene Rating Act 2013 requires all food businesses in Wales to display their hygiene ratings prominently.
New 'free play' family arcade could be set to open in Newport as plans submitted

The plans for the new arcade are now under consideration by Newport City Council. The arcade, which will have no gambling or redemption games, will be located in Chartist Tower on Upper Dock Street. The site was previously used as a cinema experience and overnight accommodation but is now closed. The arcade is expected to provide jobs for two full-time employees and 20 part-time employees. A new fascia sign will also be installed on the site.

2 1/1 A registered childminder from the Vale of Glamorgan, has won the national We Care Wales award. Sarah Sharpe, from Barry, who has been a childminder for 13 years, was awarded the accolade at the 25th Accolades Award Ceremony. This year was the first time childminders had been finalists at the event, with Ms Sharpe chosen as a winner. Ms Sharpe, who runs Poppins Daycare, said: "I am really proud to be flying the flag for childminders and promoting the sector.
20-year-old student nurse is crowned Miss Wales 2025

Helena Hawke, from Caerleon, was named Miss Wales on Saturday, May 3 at The Riverfront in Newport. Helena, who is currently undertaking her training as a nurse, has deep military roots in her family and hopes to join the Royal Air Force after her studies. In order to get an early taste of life in the force, she joined the RAF Air Cadets at the age of 14. One of her most cherished memories was flying a plane before driving a car.

This is one of the first applications submitted by Hedyn, the new merged housing association from Mellin Homes and Newport City Homes, just weeks after the merger was confirmed. The applicant is named as Josh Guy. The public notice, published on April 28, states that the application includes associated works. The notice was signed by Mrs Llinos Hallett, on behalf of Hedyn, through Asbri Planning.
