In honour of the 80th anniversary, they painted flags, decorated cakes, and adorned bedroom windows with red, white, and blue. The home was full of lively decorations, party food, and entertainment. Richard Beavis provided live music, singing old-time favourites. Family and friends joined in the celebrations. Some shared memories of the original VE Day, 80 years ago.

Dozens of locals have taken to social media to slam Monmouthshire County Council’s decision, which was confirmed by a planning inspector after a visit in January. The outbuilding, used as an outdoor seating area since February 2022, had been put up without planning permission in a conservation area. The pub’s boss, Shuan Barnsley, argued it was a typical timber shed, but the council disagreed and refused retrospective consent last June.

The Oddfellows Arms, on Commercial Street, Pontnewydd, was given the highest rating after an inspection on April 9, 2025. The food safety officer rated the pub "very good" for both hygienic food handling and management of food safety. The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were also found to be "good." The Food Hygiene Rating Act 2013 requires all food businesses in Wales to display their hygiene ratings prominently.

The plans for the new arcade are now under consideration by Newport City Council. The arcade, which will have no gambling or redemption games, will be located in Chartist Tower on Upper Dock Street. The site was previously used as a cinema experience and overnight accommodation but is now closed. The arcade is expected to provide jobs for two full-time employees and 20 part-time employees. A new fascia sign will also be installed on the site.
