Love, hope, strength, Lebanon—these are just a few of the inspirational words seen on the beaded bracelets handmade by Chloé and Tiana Khuri at the start of their philanthropic initiative, the Cedar Strong Project. The sisters were only 17 and 13 at the time, but their craft jewelry business was much more than a creative after-school activity. In August 2020, an explosion at the Port of Beirut in Lebanon sent the country into disarray, causing mass destruction and an economic crisis.

Even a rainy Monday morning couldn’t stop the excitement local community members had for the soft opening of the South Branch Library at 2210 Glasgow Ave. Just after unlocking its doors March 24, it was flooded with eager and excited guests. The newest East Baton Rouge Parish Library location, situated near Rouzan and Sprouts Farmers Market, debuted this week with adjusted hours. The unveiling comes two years after its 2023 groundbreaking.

Growing up in Peru, Giannina Chavez says there was always something to eat. She’d start her mornings in Lima with large breakfast spreads, and filling portions were always shared through dinner. “We are big eaters,” she says. “I remember coming back from school and thinking, ‘Oh my god, what has my mom cooked?’”Today, Chavez shares her love for her homeland’s cuisine through Brasas Peru, the Perkins Road eatery she owns with her brother, Renzo Ibanez, and sister-in-law, Carolina Ayala.

Perched at the south entrance of the Saturday Red Stick Farmers Market, the Fullness Farm booth holds tidy, tiered arrangements of colorful organic veggies. There are tender ready-to-eat lettuces and leafy greens, carefully washed and portioned in clear bags. There are bundles of carrots and radishes, raw materials for recipes or snacking. Broccoli and cauliflower make an appearance in cooler months, while plump tomatoes, eggplant and scads of different peppers beckon spring and summer regulars.

Last year marked a significant milestone for Louisiana Lagniappe, the fine-dining restaurant on Perkins Road known for its Gulf seafood-centric menu. The concept celebrated 40 years in business, first opening in Destin, Florida, in 1984 before relocating to Baton Rouge in 1996. Along with the anniversary, Louisiana Lagniappe experienced another big event. Founder and longtime owner Kevin Ortego sold the business.

Open since last month, Lagniappe Steak and Seafood brings a popular Springfield, Louisiana, concept to Baton Rouge. “It’s been a great start,” owner Bassam “Sam” Kasem says. “We’re seeing a lot of people come back.”Along with a robust bar program, the restaurant features a broad menu of fried and grilled seafood, steaks and shareable apps. No relation to Louisiana Lagniappe on Perkins Road, it opened in Springfield in 2012.
