    Experienced potters can get behind custom-made wheels to create their own clay masterpieces at the new Mid City Mud, BellyFire Studios’ 24-hour membership-based workshop opening this Sunday, June 1. Owner David Rollins says the space will fill a need for local potters while also creating a “third place” in Baton Rouge. Before it became Mid City Mud, the 900-square-foot spot at 3121 Government St. housed a barbershop, though Rollins says it sat vacant for some time.

    Live palm trees, two stories of seating and stacked food and drink menus: A new oasis for coffee lovers has debuted on Nicholson Drive. Pura Vida Coffee Bar opened April 26. The coffee shop comes from owners and business partners Canon Cockrell and Jordan and Victoria Arroyo, who wanted to bring a larger, chill hangout and study spot closer to LSU’s campus. The 4005 Nicholson Drive space, over 5,000 square feet, previously housed a Regymen Fitness.

    Beloved independent bookstore Red Stick Reads is back and bigger than ever. The shop recently moved from its South Eugene Street digs, but it’s staying in Mid City. The new store debuted Friday, May 10, for the neighborhood’s Hot Art Cool Nights event. It’s inside a warehouse spot at 3829 Government St., behind Baton Rouge Music Studios. The new space, which sat empty for almost 20 years, boasts almost double the square footage of Red Stick Reads’ original location.
