Shohei Ohtani was breaking plenty of records simply as the Los Angeles Dodgers' designated hitter, but now that he has returned to the mound, the slugger has taken things to a whole other level. Ohtani started Sunday's series finale against the Washington Nationals, making just his second appearance as a pitcher since undergoing elbow surgery with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023. He wound up tossing 1.0 scoreless inning, notching two strikeouts along the way.

San Francisco Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers is nursing a minor groin injury, manager Bob Melvin told the San Francisco Chronicle's Shayna Rubin and other reporters on Sunday. The issue won't keep Devers out of the lineup, as he is batting second in the finale against the Boston Red Sox, but it has prevented him from seeing action at either first or third base since he was traded to San Francisco on June 15. There is no timetable for when he could see action in the field.

Baltimore Orioles catcher Maverick Handley left Sunday's series finale against the New York Yankees due to an injury he sustained in the bottom of the second inning. Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was trying to score from second on a single by DJ LeMahieu, only to lose his left cleat after rounding third. Chisholm attempted to cut inside and leap past Handley, who was stepping up to receive the throw from left fielder Colton Cowser, but the two collided instead.

If the Minnesota Twins' pitching staff came into this weekend looking to prevent the Milwaukee Brewers' offense from hitting home runs, then they have accomplished that mission so far. Unfortunately, the Brewers have found other ways to thrive. Milwaukee ran away with a 17-6 win on Friday, racking up 19 hits and six walks. Jackson Chourio's pair of doubles were the Brewers' only extra-base hits of the contest, though, so it was death by a thousand cuts for the Twins.

It didn't take very long for the New York Mets' bats to get going Saturday night. With one out in the top of the first, Brandon Nimmo took Philadelphia Phillies rookie Mick Abel yard with a 415-foot bomb to center. Then, after going down 3-1, the Mets bounced right back with back-to-back-to-back homers from Francisco Lindor, Nimmo and Juan Soto in the third. Soto added another solo shot in the fifth, while Jared Young got in on the fun with a home run of his own in the eighth.

Jesús Luzardo had a 3.0 WAR through his first 11 starts this season. Just two starts later, the Phillies' headlining trade acquisition from this past winter boasts a 1.1 WAR. Yikes. https://t.co/4FoJIik90O
