Sidney's fire chief says he's "excited" about $176,000 in new provincial funding for a disaster-safe water supply project that's been a decade in the making. "I've been personally, as fire chief, trying to work on this project for about 10 years," said Brett Mikkelsen, who also serves as Sidney Fire Hall's emergency management coordinator. The Town of Sidney will receive the money through the new Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding (DRIF) program.

Victoria police say they arrested a 15-year-old for assaulting a BC Transit driver with bear spray in the area of Government and Superior streets Monday evening. On May 12, at approximately 7:45 p.m., VicPD officers responded to a call from BC Transit, reporting an incident near the Parliament Building, police told Victoria News. Officers say they located the suspect, a 15-year-old male, who was arrested for assault with a weapon. He was later released and returned to his residence.

Kicking off Friday (May 9) the Kulea Culture Society presents a three-day film festival in Victoria celebrating Canadians with roots across the Asian continent. Stories From the Silk Roads runs from May 9 to 11. It will host a curated selection of feature films and short films by Asian and Asian-Canadian filmmakers.
