    An all-candidate forum took place in Creston’s Kootenay River Auditorium last night, with all four of the Kootenay Central riding candidates making an appearance. Various topics and challenges, such as housing, the economy, and healthcare, were discussed, with each candidate getting their word out. Three candidates, Incumbent NDP Brittny Anderson, Independent Corrine Mori, and Conservative Kelly Vandenberghe, appeared in person while BC Green Nicole Charlwood attended remotely due to illness.

    The annual Truth and Reconciliation Day march will take place on Monday as the Yaqan Nukiy (Lower Kootenay Band) and the Creston community make their way up Highway 21 to mark the holiday’s significance. The first march was started years ago by community members Tina Jimmy and Cheryl Louie. “I credit them. This was their vision and what was once just the two of them walking has blossomed into something that is just outstanding for everyone involved,” added Nasukin Jason Louie.

    The ground has broken on the Seven Nations Soaring Eagles Treatment Centre to be completed in West Creston. It will be a 16-bed facility, with multiple programs available for Indigenous people throughout BC.     On Friday, a march of Take Back the Night walked from Millennium Park, down Canyon Street, and back, in Creston. Survivors of gender-based sexual and domestic violence and their supporters shared their experiences and showed their support during the Take Back the Night March. Stephannie Dunn, Executive Director at the Kootenay Community Centre Society in Creston says it is a worldwide movement that is over 50 years old that originated in Vancouver.

    Two potential bylaw affecting the West Creston Fire Service went to vote last week. Both bylaws, which called for an increase to the maximum annual allowable requisition for the fire service and a loan authorization respectively, were voted down. Unofficial numbers tally the vote as 90 in favour and 148 against.
