Rossland city council narrowly nixed Sue Big Oil’s request to engage in a class-action lawsuit against fossil-fuel companies at its council meeting on Monday (Jan. 13). “Sue Big Oil is a movement of British Columbians calling on their local governments to work together to file a class action lawsuit against the world’s largest polluters – demanding they pay a fair share of the climate costs facing B.C. communities,” the nonprofit states on its website.

The upcoming Rossland Winter Carnival is going to be snow much fun this year. The Winter Carnival line up of events, vendors, and venues, in conjunction with the Blizzard Music Festival, is running January 24-26 and promises to be an over the top entertaining and enjoyable weekend. "It's exciting," said Winter Carnival chair Lisa Kwiatkowski. "We obviously have a great snow-year so that's going to make a world of difference, particularly for the bobsled.

The Trail U18 Smoke Eaters couldn't stop the Coeur d'Alene Thunder from seizing gold at the Greater Trail Minor Hockey U18 tournament, Jan. 3-5. Trail battled their way to the final but fell to the Thunder 5-1. The Jr. Smokies won two of three games in the round robin, its only loss to Coeur d'Alene. The Thunder went undefeated in the tournament winning five straight matches.

Trail Smoke Eaters forward Judah Makway committed to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (NCAA) and take his game to the next level in 2025-26. The Trail product has played in 114 games over three seasons for the Smoke Eaters, and has made a huge impact as assistant captain this year. Makway is currently third in team scoring with 10 goals and 22 points in 27 games. “I’m super excited to move on to the next level and join Alaska-Anchorage for the next four years," said Makway.

The Beaver Valley Skating Club will celebrate 50 years on the ice by hosting the West Kootenay Invitational on December 13-15. Over 105 skaters from 11 skating clubs from across the Kootenays will compete in the event at the Beaver Valley Arena. The competition includes interpretive events, with singles, couples and adult open categories, as well as solo dance events and an elements competition.
