Red-cockaded woodpeckers are making a comeback after years of habitat loss. But in checking things out, they verified that a single red-cockaded woodpecker had settled at the Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve, where the bird was digging a hole in a pine tree for a nest.

Highway Patrol is trying to find the driver of a car involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision near Orangeburg last weekend. Sometime between midnight and 5:45 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle struck a pedestrian on S.C. 29, known locally as Belleville Road, north of the city of Orangeburg, killing the person, according to a statement from the Highway Patrol.
