PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The R.I. Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a high-profile bill aimed at restricting the sale of certain military-style firearms, though the outlook for the measure remains uncertain. The committee voted 8-6 Wednesday in favor of a scaled-back version of the controversial Assault Weapons Ban Act, which cleared the R.I. House earlier this month.

WAREHAM, Mass. (WPRI) - An Attleboro man was killed in a motorcycle crash in Wareham Thursday evening, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz. Matthew Burns, 49, was riding his motorcycle northbound down Cranberry Highway when Cruz said he lost control, veered into the southbound lane and was hit by an oncoming car. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Burns was pronounced dead at the scene. Burns was riding alongside three other motorcyclists at the time of the crash.

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) - Police arrested a Glocester man wanted out of Connecticut following a separate domestic incident in Burrillville Thursday night. Robert Connors, 29, has been charged with felony domestic assault, as well as reckless driving and eluding, willful trespass, two counts of threatening a public official, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - State lawmakers are proceeding with caution after Gov. Dan McKee announced that it will cost $427 million and take until at least November 2028 to rebuild the westbound Washington Bridge Friday. McKee said the state has hired Walsh Construction Co. of Chicago to rebuild the heavily traveled bridge that abruptly closed to traffic in December 2023 after a structural failure.

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) - Police have arrested a New York man accused of orchestrating a scheme that scammed a Dartmouth woman out of $86,500. Arman Verma, 21, of Queens, New York, was taken into custody Wednesday following a successful "reverse sting operation" by detectives with the Dartmouth Police Department and a special agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
