Art Abound: Theater near and far

“Hadestown” and “The Importance of Being Earnest” could not be more different. The former is a jazzy musical that made its Broadway debut in 2019 and features a large ensemble cast. The latter, written by Oscar Wilde, premiered in 1895 and is a comedy featuring a small cast. Both center on themes of love but with wildly — pun intended — different approaches to the concept. And both were great fun to watch last month.

Passersby on a recent Friday night in downtown Napa were met with the hum of synthesizers on First Street — the sounds activating colorful images on old-style CRT television screens positioned throughout the corridor. Artist Sean Hallowell called the rhythmic tune “Song 1,” prompting laughter from dozens of people leaning against the walls along an area known as Artist Alley, which on that Friday lived up to its name.

Far Niente Wine Estates, the Napa Valley-based owner of six wineries, on Thursday announced the retirement of chief executive Steve Spadarotto. In a news release, Far Niente also announced the appointment of longtime wine industry executive Carol Reber as its new CEO. Reber has spent the past 25 years in key luxury wine industry leadership positions, including serving on the Far Niente board of directors for the past two years, the winery said in its statement.
Festival Napa Valley announces support for wildfire relief with concert

In an effort to support those impacted by this month's Los Angeles-area wildfires, organizers of a Festival Napa Valley concert in March will direct proceeds toward relief efforts. “Festival Napa Valley extends its deepest sympathy to all who have lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones in the devastating wildfires in Southern California," the organization said in a statement.
