Gaona shared her reaction after four middle school students showed up to school and impaired, according to Keith King, the Granville County Schools District Safety Officer. "It's a little worrying because I have four kids," Gaona said. King said the students ranged from 12 to 13 years old. "Very concerning," is how he described the incident. "Slurred speech, a little lethargic, just truly not fully coherent," King told WRAL Investigates about the children.

On Wakefield Lane in Garner, neighbors told WRAL one home has been vacant for roughly two decades. "Anyone who comes down the block and looks at it says 'What is that?'" explained Billy Shaw. "It's an abandoned house. It's been here 20 years and needs to be dealt with."Shaw lives across the street from the home. He says, more so than just a visual frustration, the property is a health hazard. He said wild animals have taken up residence inside.

A Durham man who assaulted a police officer and an emergency chaplain in 2023 was sentenced in March to 270 days behind bars. Members of the law enforcement community and the chaplain community reached out to WRAL Investigates, outraged that the sentence was not longer. "The punishment didn't fit the crime," said Ralph Thompson, executive director for the Emergency Chaplains group.

Durham District Attorney Satana Deberry said one explanation for her low attendance in office was due to "frequent technical and vendor issues with the courthouse’s security system, which have been a longstanding concern."That sparked concern from some who reached out to WRAL Investigates, wondering if the building is safe.
