We’ve taken the unusual step of clearing our front page today to draw your attention to an issue that could be disastrous, not just for local newspapers like the Manchester Evening News, but the UK’s entire creative sector. Under proposed changes to copyright law, AI companies will be able to train their systems on text, images, music and any other online content without having to pay the creators of that content for the ability to summarise, recreate or even replicate it.

Introduction Intertidal oyster habitats are ecologically and economically important in many regions around the world (Beck et al., 2011). Manchester United is a Mancunian institution. It's a privilege to have them on our doorstep and to cover them minutely. But we are not on the club's payroll. Our job is to report what's happening in the organisations that matter to our readers. And that includes our great football clubs. We do not publish anything lightly and all of our stories are sourced and checked. We have a responsibility to the readers who place such trust in us to faithfully report what we know and what we see.

It has taken the local out of local radio, drastically cutting the number of hours of the locally-produced shows you’ll hear on Radio Manchester. Much-loved broadcasting legend Alan Beswick aired his final show in October after more than 30 years. It came after the BBC announced plans to share shows across regions and the whole of the country.
