The World Press Photo award winner for 2025 is announced today, but there was little air of celebration around Samar Abu Elouf when she arrived at the exhibition in Amsterdam where her victorious shot took pride of place. Its subject is a boy called Mahmoud Ajjour, then age nine and now ten, who lost both his arms in an Israeli attack on Gaza a little over a year ago. When she took the picture, Abu Elouf says, she was thinking of her own four children, the youngest of whom is 12.

In a move expected to boost the ailing British art market, the UK Treasury has extended the period during which fine art and antiques from overseas can come into the country free of import duties. There is perhaps no better place to be in early February than Mexico City for the capital’s Art Week. Zona Maco, arguably Latin America’s most important art fair, runs from 5 to 9 February—its satellites Material and Salón Acme take place from 6 to 9 February—drawing collectors from around the country and globe. But this year gallerists will have to contend with US President Donald Trump’s impending import tariffs, combined with a globally lacklustre market, could put a damper on sales.
