It is possible the Southeast will feel an earthquake aftershock in the coming days, according to a U.S. Geological Survey report. A 4.1-magnitude earthquake that originated near Knoxville the morning of May 10 could be felt as far away as the Carolinas and Atlanta, Georgia. To understand the scale of that quake, the universal magnitude scale shows earthquakes as minor as 2.5 can be felt in a community.

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake shook Knoxville and East Tennessee at 9:04 a.m. ET May 10, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake originated near Greenback, Tennessee, which is 30 miles southwest of Knoxville. The earthquake was about 15 miles deep, the USGS says, which is considered a shallow quake. It was the seventh earthquake with a 4.0 magnitude or greater since 1900 and the first since a 4.4-magnitude quake hit Decatur in 2018.

A 44-year-old pedestrian was killed in a crash on Broadway at Atlantic Avenue on April 30. Police say Michael Young was hit by an SUV while he was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk. The crash happened at about 10:30 a.m., and Young died at the scene. The driver stayed on the scene, Knoxville police said in a news release.

Federal prosecutors charged a Tullahoma man suspected of starting the fire that destroyed part of the historic Highlander Center six years ago. An FBI agent says in court documents Regan Prater extensively participated in neo-Nazi online group chats and shared a symbol that was found spraypainted at the fire scene. Some of these connections led to his arrest after a tipster alerted authorities.
