This article contains mention and video of violence. As UBC’s Board of Governors (BoG) met in the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre to approve the university’s 2025/26 budget last Friday, a group of about two-dozen protesters called on the BoG from outside the locked and guarded Alumni Centre to divest from companies they say are complicit in genocide and human rights abuses in Gaza and the West Bank. This protest was the fourth demonstration in recent weeks pressuring the university to divest.

As students filtered into UBC on March 24 and 25 they were met with the booming chants — and at times songs — of pro-Palestine protesters. On March 14, the student-proposed referendum asking the AMS to endorse a two-day strike to demand UBC divest from companies students say are complicit in Palestinian human rights violations passed with 7,917 students (76 per cent of 11,365 voters) in favour of the action. On March 18, Israel broke a two-month ceasefire that began on January 19.

After three days of play, UBC campus will see a rematch of last year’s U Sports women’s basketball national championship game between the first-seeded University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the third-seeded Carleton University Ravens. Both teams come to the championship game after being stand-out teams in their conference.

Board members have no say over editorial decisions at the paper such as what The Ubyssey reports on and how the editorial board cover stories.

At this year's March 5 AMS elections Indigenous forum, candidates spoke about improving consultation and the role the proposed AMS VP student life could have on Indigenous students at UBC. Candidates from nearly all election races made appearances at the forum, but out of 30 candidates, only 12 attended. Not all candidates participated in the conversation or answered every question.

This year, the AMS is putting forth four referenda items for students to vote on. AMS Council also has yet to vote to bring a student-proposed referendum to students. Voting for candidates is not the only way students can enact tangible change, voting on referendum questions is another way to influence what happens within the university. Organized by Palestine Strike Action UBC, protesters in solidarity with Palestine staged a demonstration on November 27 to demand the cancellation of a course run by UBC’s Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies (AMNE). The course in question, AMNE 395/595 — which is the course code for all archeological field schools — is a class UBC offers through Go Global to train students in the principles and methods of field archaeology as practiced in the Mediterranean and Near East.

Ayesha Irfan campaigned to become the AMS VP external on a platform advocating for international students, housing and transit. Halfway through the year, this is where she stands on accomplishing her campaign promises and goals. Seven months into her term, Irfan has made significant strides toward her goals on student outreach, transit and gender-based violence prevention advocacy but some of her other goals on international student support and student housing rights have not yet been achieved.
