As students filtered into UBC on March 24 and 25 they were met with the booming chants — and at times songs — of pro-Palestine protesters. On March 14, the student-proposed referendum asking the AMS to endorse a two-day strike to demand UBC divest from companies students say are complicit in Palestinian human rights violations passed with 7,917 students (76 per cent of 11,365 voters) in favour of the action. On March 18, Israel broke a two-month ceasefire that began on January 19.

Organized by Palestine Strike Action UBC, protesters in solidarity with Palestine staged a demonstration on November 27 to demand the cancellation of a course run by UBC’s Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies (AMNE). The course in question, AMNE 395/595 — which is the course code for all archeological field schools — is a class UBC offers through Go Global to train students in the principles and methods of field archaeology as practiced in the Mediterranean and Near East.

On first-year move-in day in August 2023, Alex, who was working as a residence advisor (RA), stepped outside to take a breath. This break began a chain of events that would eventually lead Alex to leave his job. As an individual with depersonalization-derealization disorder (DPDR), Alex found himself starting to stumble over words and becoming unfocused. Alex often relies on taking short breaks during long periods of focus in order to keep his disassociation in check.
