    Missouri's State Tax Commission is again ordering Jackson County to revise its property tax assessments from recent years, and defiance from the county's top official has spawned a recall effort — and potentially a state investigation. In a Tuesday directive, the commission ordered the county to base its 2025 assessments on corrected 2023 and 2024 assessments. It also reaffirmed the commission’s order to roll back the earlier assessments, which the county has so far refused to follow.

But the center has outgrown its space since it opened in 1980. The facility can’t meet the needs of industry changes or include new programs based on demand. The Kansas City Council approved $25 million in funding for a new space last week.

    Property owners in Jackson County may get some relief on their property tax assessments this year. County Executive Frank White Jr. announced today that the county will preemptively cap all assessment increases at 15%. The move comes after taxpayers were hit with higher bills on their 2023 assessments. Property values, which had been undervalued for years, rose by an average of 30%. In some cases the increase was more than 100%.

Marion, who now works at a Kansas City Wendy’s, has been a fast food worker for more than 20 years. During most of that time, she has not had paid sick leave. “You feel like a failure when you can't stay with your sick child,” Marion said.

    Officials have been trying for years to build a cap above a portion of Interstate 670. Three years ago, work began to finally build a park that will cover four blocks of the South Loop and reconnect the Crossroads to downtown. At the Downtown Council’s 2025 annual luncheon, officials with the Downtown Council, Port KC and the City of Kansas City, Missouri — partners in the major development project — announced a name for the park.
