GLIDE — For supporters of the Wolf Creek Job Corps program, its potential closure feels like Déjà vu all over again. Wolf Creek, along with all other Job Corps programs nationwide, would be shuttered under President Trump’s proposed discretionary budget for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. For supporters of the program, which at Wolf Creek just celebrated its 60th anniversary, the looming closure is eerily similar to what happened in 2019.

Wine may be the beverage of choice and prominence in the Umpqua Valley, but craft beer is also popular here and continues to grow. Beer here dates back to the 1800s, when hops became a major crop in the area before prohibition was enacted. In 1864, John Rast and Gottlieb Mehl founded the Roseburg Brewery and by 1890 they were producing 15 barrels of Roseburger Export Beer a day. Their beer was delivered by kegs as far south as Ashland.

If you like winter snow you’re in luck; snowpacks are just a short, beautiful drive along scenic Highway 138 (which hugs the North Umpqua River) to the often overlooked gem of Diamond Lake. If you really want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, drive a little bit further to the renowned Crater Lake National Park. Lodging is available at both lakes. Here’s a look at what awaits during the winter at those locations.

One of the joys of heading to the coast from inland Douglas County is the drive itself. There are two ways to go. The first will take you onto Highway 42 from Winston to Reedsport which covers about 100 miles and takes two hours. The trip passes through several quaint towns, including Tenmile, Camas Valley and Coquille. The second is Highway 38 which hugs the Umpqua River as it winds to the Pacific Ocean. The drive covers about 80 miles and takes 1 ½ hours.
