    Omaha voters headed to the polls Tuesday to cast their votes in the city’s general election, where the mayor and City Council seats were featured on the ballot. The polls closed at 8 p.m., and based on early ballots only incumbent mayoral candidate Jean Stothert had 21,777 votes to challenger John Ewing Jr.'s 25,349. Stothert and Ewing advanced to the general election after receiving 27,245 and 24,605 votes in the April 1 primary, respectively.

    The polls are closed in Lincoln’s general election, with early results being reported. Included on the ballot are three seats on the Lincoln City Council, four School Board positions and a spot on the Airport Authority. Also on the ballot was a measure that seeks to bar landlords from denying renters based solely on their source of income. Based on early voting only, most voters supported the measure with 12,801 votes in favor and 4,754 against.

    Firefighters are working to contain a fire in northern Nebraska that’s burned up to 25,000 acres. According to a social media post by the Nebraska Forest Service, the Plum Creek Fire was started by an escaped prescribed burn. Since it started Monday, the blaze has been burning through steep canyons and timber between Valentine and Ainsworth and scorched an estimated 12,000–14,000 acres as of Tuesday. At that time, it was around 30% contained.

    Lincoln residents cast their votes Tuesday to decide if the city will continue a quarter-cent sales tax to pay for street projects. The tax was the main item on the primary election ballot. Polls closed at 8 p.m. and votes in favor of the sales tax issue took a commanding lead with 13,278 in favor and 3,777 against. Results will be updates throughout the night on the Lancaster County Election Commissioner's website.

    Gov. Jim Pillen has declared a state of emergency for more than 20 counties impacted by last Wednesday’s winter storm. The combination of rain, sleet, hail, heavy snow, and high winds resulted in closures across multiple roadways, including Interstate 80. A press release from the Governor’s Office stated that conditions also did considerable damage to trees and power lines, resulting in a loss of electricity across multiple service areas.
