GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Arctic air has made its return to West Michigan and temperatures will remain far below average until the latter half of the week. High temperatures are forecast to climb between 15 degrees and 20 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, while lows drop into the single digits. Average highs are in the middle 30s. Grand Rapids has yet to make it up to 40 degrees in the month of February.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Lake-effect snow carries into the start of the work week with some impacts on travel conditions. A winter weather advisory has been extended through 7 p.m. Monday for lakeshore counties. This is where the snow will fall at its greatest intensity, causing slick roads and periods of low visibility. Wind gusts exceeding 30 mph happened Sunday evening and carried over through Monday. This northwest flow pulls in Arctic air for much of the Great Lakes region.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A winter storm watch has been issued for West Michigan beginning Wednesday afternoon for widespread accumulating snow, breezy winds and cold temperatures. There is a high chance everyone will receive at least 4 inches of new snow, with many locations receiving as much as 8 inches. There is a chance a light wintry mix could develop in southern Michigan. The best chance for wintry mix to develop would be in southeast Michigan.

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — It may not be what you’d expect to see in the middle of an Arctic blast: a “snownado.” Tom Gifford spotted one along the lakeshore in Muskegon Wednesday: The shores of Lake Michigan are one of the only places you are likely to see one during a winter storm. Snownados are similar to a dust devil in that they’re both very small-scale rotating columns of air characterized by what material they lift off the ground.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A quick-hitting disturbance will swing through beginning late Wednesday night and primarily during the morning hours Thursday, bringing more snow to West Michigan. Snow showers along a warm front boundary will move in from northwest to southeast. Snow should arrive in West Michigan near midnight Wednesday, continuing into Thursday morning. Snow will be falling at its heaviest rate and be most widespread before sunrise Thursday.
