Media coverage in Hamilton last week about the derelict Jamesville social housing project that’s fallen into disrepair over the years became the most recent flashpoint for what seems to be growing frustration with city hall. Talk to people around town and you’ll find that many are angry that their taxes are going up and up and up, but the performance of city hall doesn’t seem to be following at the same pace.

It was about a year ago that a few of them found themselves watching a documentary about four British women who’d spent nine months rowing across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Australia. “Losing Sight of Shore,” it was called. As they were leaving the theatre, an inspired Marla Iyer turned to her friends. “Oh, I’d like to do Lake Ontario,” she told them. For more than a dozen years, the Dundas resident has paddled on dragon boat teams. She loves it.

A few weeks ago, a downtown Hamilton church received a notice from the city letting it know that if it didn’t deal with some uneven areas in its parking lot, patch a hole in its fence, repair a broken exterior window, remove graffiti and fix a few other things, the congregation could be facing a fine of as much as $500,000. It had less than a month to comply. Philpott Memorial apparently wasn’t alone.

A few days from now, Burlington’s Phil Pritchard is going to do what he’s done every June for years and walk the Stanley Cup out to centre ice to present to the new National Hockey League champions. With apologies to sportscaster Jim Nance and his famous line about the Masters, this is a tradition like no other. A few weeks after that’s done, Pritchard will start travelling to the ends of the earth to give each of the winners their day with the trophy.

She was doing her twice-weekly laps at the Jimmy Thompson Pool about a year ago when another lady in the water complimented her technique. “Where did you learn how to swim?” Patty Bogumil was asked. Right here, she said. About seven decades ago. “Who taught you?” came the followup question. Jimmy Thompson, she answered. That clearly impressed the other woman. Everyone in Hamilton knows that name. He’s an icon. So one more query naturally followed. Did she actually know him once upon a time?
