At the upcoming Merrie Monarch Festival on the Big Island, the kāne (men) of Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leināʻala are set to perform a kahiko (ancient) dance dedicated to Mo‘ikeha, a Tahitian chief who arrived on Kaua‘i after voyaging between other islands. La‘amaikahiki, a son of Mo‘ikeha, brought the first pahu (drum) to Kaua‘i, according to the hālau’s kumu hula, Leināʻala Pavao Jardin. “Much of our hula is done with that drum, still, today,” Jardin said.

While Kaua‘i has an abundance of rich soil and rain that is ideal for growing crops, access to this land is out of reach for many local farmers. “It’s really, really hard to get ag land on Kaua‘i,” said Megan Fox, executive director of the nonprofit Mālama Kaua‘i.

On Friday, students at Kaua‘i High School will showcase their academic pursuits during an open house for invited guests. The open house began as a project in teacher Greg Anderson’s business class, centered on the high school’s Raider Café. It began to snowball when Anderson’s burgeoning entrepreneurs began to collaborate with their peers in other classes, turning a small idea into a school-wide affair.
Pine Trees Longboard Classic returns to Hanalei Bay with surfers from Hawaiʻi and beyond | Kauai Now

Surfers are stoked as the Pine Trees Longboard Classic, a beloved competition held on the North Shore of Kaua‘i, returns for its 44th year. About 300 surfers of all ages, competing in 12 open divisions and four invitational competitions, are expected to compete March 7 through March 9 at Hanalei Bay. The Longboard Classic is free to attend and spectators are encouraged throughout the three-day event. Competition times for each division can be found online.
