At Kilmer Middle School, behavior referrals are at an all-time high. More than 1,600 students have been written up, but not for the reason you might be thinking. This past fall, Kilmer began writing students up, for acts of kindness.

One asks for a new backpack for a student who recently lost her parents. Another seeks money to cover a school field trip fee. With the click of his mouse, Fitzsimmons approves the requests, and help is sent to kids in need. “I feel like Santa Clause,” Fitzsimmons said with a laugh.

He offers suggestions to students working on projects that range from making masks to sketching flags from different countries. “If there is a philosophy to this room, it’s that everyone is welcome,” Ravenstahl said.
