For decades, at the Division 1-A level, college football viewed the word "playoff" as a four letter word. For damn near the entire 20th century, the national champion was voted on by sportswriters and coaches, not decided on the field. Finally, in the mid '90s, the powers that be agreed to a format that gave us a two-team title game. Getting to that stage was monumental. From there, it took another two decades to get a four team playoff, and from there another decade to expand to a 12-team playoff.

The anticipation continues to build for the 2025 Houston Texans. Training camp is just a couple months out, and the season itself starts in about 100 days. The Texans have made plenty of moves, most of which appear to have potential for instant improvement over 2024. Before we get to camp in July, though, there are a few more milestones on the calendar.

In the last 24 months or so, no Major League Baseball team has been hit harder with crippling injuries to starting pitchers than the Houston Astros. In fact, you could have made that statement before this season had even started, and it may have still been true, but that pain has only been exacerbated in the 2025 season, as Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco, two of the team's five starters heading into the season, have both been set down with elbow injuries in the last two weeks.

In NFL history, there is only one pairing of a rookie quarterback and a first year head coach who have gone on to win their division and win a playoff game in their first two seasons together — C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans with the Houston Texans these last two seasons. While there are certainly areas in which the Texans need to improve, the first two seasons of the Stroud/Ryans Era have been a success, especially considering what the three seasons before both got her looked like.

😂😂😂 yes… it’s true. As Tyrion Lannister might say “If you’ve come here looking for a lack of bitching, you’ve come to the wrong place” https://t.co/WC6DS0kdRw

@SeanTPendergast Also, isn’t bitching like 90% of social media?

Isn’t telling someone to “stop bitching” technically also bitching? You’re right Jonathan, I should be happy… like you!😂

@SeanTPendergast Stop bitching. It’s Friday. Enjoy the win and cheer for a series victory.

Huh??

@SeanTPendergast You saw the start. This was no different than Russ Blalock's first OTA snap. If you can't see the talent of tough, smart, dependable players then you shouldn't be in sports media, much less on Twitter (X?).
