King City hosts community vigil for fallen officer

KING CITY — Staff from the City of King as well as personnel from the King City Police Department hosted a vigil last Wednesday for Sgt. Ryan Kenedy, who died unexpectedly while on duty on March 25. Community members were able to fill out cards to Kenedy’s family and share their stories of his impact and service. “It’s been a long two weeks and it’s nice to see the community come out to honor Sgt. Ryan Kenedy,” said King City Chief of Police James Hunt. “Ryan was simply taken from us too soon.

KING CITY — King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture recognized four top contributors to the community this past Saturday. The audience gathered at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds’ Orradre Building to honor Debby Norman as the Citizen of the Year, King City Town Square as the Business of the Year, Rodolfo Tapia as Friend of the Community and Dalilah Reyes as the Hermie Robles Youth Award recipient for the year 2024.

KING CITY — The staff and board of Sol Treasures recently hosted an “Artstravaganza” to not only raise funds for the King City gallery and its many programs, but also to review the organization’s past and community impact. The event was held Sept. 21 in the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds Pavilion Building, and featured an evening of homages to “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) skits, along with speeches.
MCARLM hosts first Walk-A-Thon to raise funds for preservation

KING CITY — Community members were invited to see San Lorenzo Park and the museums within during the recent MCARLM Walk-A-Thon. The casual, family-friendly event on Sept. 21, hosted by Monterey County Agricultural and Rural Life Museum (MCARLM) in King City, allowed participants to trickle in and take their time on a one-mile lap. Event entry was free, with participant donations and fundraising totaling $2,000 for the event. Money raised went back to museum upkeep and educational programs.
King City elementary students begin Dual Language Immersion program

KING CITY — Students from three classrooms at Santa Lucia Elementary School in King City have completed their first month of the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. The new program, launched this school year, teaches students from all backgrounds in a blend of Spanish and English with the goal of having the youth be able to read, write and speak in two languages by the end of their elementary school journey.

GONZALES — Asante Madrigal, a former Gonzales resident, was chosen by NBCUniversal as one of 27 social media influencers to cover the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Known on his TikTok, YouTube and Instagram accounts as King Asante, Madrigal headed to Paris on Aug. 5 as a member of the press with NBC and TikTok. He returned from the France trip on Aug. 11.
Sol Treasures youth art exhibit inspires creative alternatives

KING CITY — Sol Treasures in King City recently began a new exhibition featuring creations by local youth artists Elliot Riley and Harper Stamps. Artwork by Riley, 19, and Stamps, 12, was installed Aug. 14, and a Meet the Artists evening was held Aug. 16, with the front two rooms of the gallery filled with visitors. Their art will remain on display through October.
King City’s La Cocina becomes Blue Zones certified

KING CITY — La Cocina (The Kitchen) in King City has been recognized as the first outdoor market in Monterey County to be Blue Zones certified. A membership ribbon cutting was held Aug. 2 in conjunction with the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture to honor La Cocina becoming a Blue Zones Project Inspired Market. More than 115 people attended the Friday evening event, marking the market vendors’ commitment to provide healthy, plant-based options on their menus.
Greenfield cancer survivor leads Kiddie Kapers Parade as grand marshal

GREENFIELD — Greenfield’s Kelly Mata Navarro, a 12-year-old cancer survivor, was the grand marshal for this year’s California Rodeo Salinas’ Kiddie Kapers Parade. Navarro waved to the thousands of people lining the sides of South Main Street on July 14 from the back of a 1966 Ford Mustang, near the front of the parade lineup. Parade participants were mostly youth, ranging from babies in strollers up to a high school marching band.
Sol Treasures’ Hermie Robles Creation Station honors late board director

KING CITY — Sol Treasures has begun a rollout of the Hermie Robles Creation Station, a room with technical equipment that can not only be a classroom, but also a creative center for artists, musicians and learners. Aimed mainly for youth, the room’s laptops, equipment and software allow for users to be able to do coding, graphic design, podcasting, digital music, photo editing and other technical production.
