South Dakota has reported it’s first measles case. State Department of Health released information on an infected person who they say visited several public locations. Those locations include Rapid City Medical Center Urgent Care, and Monument Health Urgent Care in Sturgis. Those who may have been exposed are recommended to seek more information from the South Dakota Department of Health.

It will be a bit warmer for Memorial Day weekend across southeastern North Dakota. Only slight chances of rain are forecast over the next week in Stutsman County. Temperatures will rise into the mid-60s and settle there through the weekend, with mostly cloudy skies and slight-to-moderate winds. The 25% precipitation chance on Sunday and Monday are the highest over the next ten days.
Jamestown’s State Hospital Getting $300 Million Makeover

The North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown is getting a $300 million makeover. The state Legislature earmarked the over-quarter billion dollars to build a new mental health care facility to replace the aging building that was first built in 1885. City leaders, hospital administration, and legislators are working on a plan for the new building to have 140 beds on a 30-acre campus next to the current facility. The new hospital would house 18 more people than the old building.
ND Legislature Approves $150,000 Funding For Rail Service

The North Dakota State Legislature has approved $150,000 to fund planning of passenger rail service through the state. The state’s ‘Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority’ has advocated for state funding to plan for possible stops in Jamestown, Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, and Medora.
‘Truth-In-Sentencing’ Bill Fails To Pass in North Dakota House

The North Dakota House has failed to pass the so-called ‘Truth-in-Sentencing’ bill. Senate Bill 2128 passed in the upper chamber, and would have required inmates to serve at least half of their total sentence before coming eligible for parole or early release. Additional amendment to the bill would have also increased penalties for assaulting or fleeing law enforcement officers. The failure of the bill followed a ‘Do Not Pass’ recommendation from the House Judiciary Committee.
Winter Storm Advisory Continues Friday Across North dakota

A winter storm system is continuing to affect North Dakota through Friday night. The system intensified in the early morning hours, with a Winter Storm Advisory being issued by the National Weather Service. Some area, especially north of I-94, can expect some hours with multiple inches of snow falling. Temperatures may warm up to slightly above freezing in the early afternoon in southcentral North Dakota.
North Dakota Lawmakers Advance Term-Limit Extension Measure

North Dakota voters may be asked to again decide on legislative term limits in the state. A resolution narrowly passed by the senate would put a constitutional measure on the ballot that would allow legislators to serve up to 16 years. The current limit is eight, with the term limit becoming law after a citizen-initiated measure in 2022. The measure would be put on the ballot for voters to decide on the extension.

A bill to fund improvements to the Stutsman County Fairgrounds is making it’s way through the North Dakota Legislature. House Bill 1591 would provide up to $100,000 through grants to improve what proponents describe as aging facilities at the Fairgrounds on the north side of Jamestown.
Car Hits Deer, Ignites in Flames on I-29 in Richland County

Photo Credit Getty Images A car caught fire in Richland County after striking a deer. The incident happened Monday at 5:40 a.m. on I-29 near Mooreton. The driver struck the deer, which the man said had jumped out unexpectedly in front of the vehicle, according to reports. The Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Mooreton Fire Department, and ambulance services responded to the scene. The car was eventually extinguished, but was considered a total loss. The driver escaped unharmed.
New Poll Shows North Dakotans Support Limiting Property Tax Increases, Support of Same-Sex Marriage

A new poll of North Dakotans shows strong support for property tax credit increases and same sex marriage rights. The poll, commissioned by the North Dakota News Cooperative, shows that 64% of state residents support a three-percent annual cap on property tax increases. This is a plan supported by Governor Kelly Armstrong and a majority of the State House.
