KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - You usually think about Lyme disease from a tick bite, but another condition called Alpha Gal Syndrome is now making headlines, thanks to a new state law. It’s an allergy to red meat, usually caused by a lone star tick bite. Those ticks primarily lives in the Southeast. It’s been hard to find out exactly how often people get diagnosed, but that’s about to change. Dr. Corinne Tandy is the Division Director of Epidemiology for Knox County Health Department.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) is looking into an automated scoring system to help get test scores back faster. The algorithm would grade Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) written tests, not just multiple choice. It’s not really a new concept, though; the state has been looking into this algorithm for years now. Assistant Commissioner of Assessment, Accountability and Research Dr. David Laird said it can only score essays in the Tennessee.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The older American population is growing in Tennessee, meaning senior centers will need more resources. Department of Disability and Aging (DDA) Commissioner Brad Turner said that’s especially true for East Tennessee. Because of that, the department has opened a $5 million grant program for senior centers. Centers can apply for a one-time grant that ranges from $10,000 to $50,000.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A round of new Tennessee laws can mean changes for local governments, and Knox County Commission is looking into how they will impact East Tennessee. The commission is looking for ways to boost the county budget, including taxes. Some of this has to do with fees the counties pay. Some of these changes come from Nashville, meaning more money could go to county projects that can impact residents.

LOUDON CO., Tenn. (WVLT) - Thousands travel I-75 each day in East Tennessee, but there’s been more than 20 crashes in the last month on a particular stretch of Loudon County that’s causing concerns for officials. Loudon County Sheriff Jimmy Davis said his deputies are called out to that stretch nearly every day. To stay safe, he said patrols are on the rise, but he urges drivers to stay mindful on the road.
